Zambezi Trader: Zimbabwe’s Most Relaxing Adventure on the River
When most people think of Zimbabwe, they picture the thundering waters of Victoria Falls or the incredible wildlife of Hwange National Park. Yet beyond the famous attractions lies another side of the country, one that feels more authentic, more peaceful, and deeply connected to everyday life along the mighty Zambezi River.
For travellers looking to experience a part of Zimbabwe that many visitors never see, the Zambezi Trader offers something truly special. This isn’t about ticking off wildlife sightings or rushing between attractions. Instead, it’s an opportunity to slow down and immerse yourself in a region cherished by local communities, where fishing villages line the riverbanks, children wave as you pass, and life moves at the rhythm of the water.
Recently relocated from Lake Kariba to the beautiful waters around Msuna Island, the Zambezi Trader offers a unique way to experience one of Africa’s most iconic rivers. Days onboard revolve around relaxation, spectacular scenery, fascinating local culture and simply enjoying the journey along the Zambezi itself.
We were fortunate enough to spend three nights onboard recently, and it quickly became clear why this is becoming one of Zimbabwe’s most exciting tourism products.
A Stylish Floating Hotel
One of the biggest surprises onboard was just how stylish the Zambezi Trader has become following its recent renovation. While many river vessels focus purely on practicality, this boat manages to combine comfort with a real sense of character. From the moment you step onboard, it is clear that considerable effort has gone into creating an environment that feels welcoming, interesting and distinctly connected to the region through which you are travelling.
Clearly, a great deal of thought has gone into creating a vessel with real personality. Rather than opting for a generic hotel-like design, the owners have embraced the history, culture and landscapes of the Zambezi. Every deck contains little details that encourage guests to slow down and take a closer look. Whether you are relaxing between meals or simply wandering around the boat, there is always something interesting to discover.
The décor feels authentic and engaging rather than overly polished or corporate. Beautiful wallpaper adds colour and character throughout the vessel, while fascinating maps charting the river’s journey help guests understand the route and geography of this remarkable waterway. Historic photographs of the Zambezi and Lake Kariba provide a glimpse into the region’s past, while striking artworks and sculptures created by local Zimbabwean artists showcase the area’s creative talent. Together, these elements create a genuine sense of place and help connect guests to the landscapes and communities they are travelling through. It’s the sort of boat where you’ll regularly find yourself wandering the corridors, stopping to admire a photograph, studying an old map, or taking a closer look at a sculpture while heading to breakfast or dinner. The public spaces feel thoughtfully curated rather than simply decorated, giving the vessel a warm and distinctive atmosphere that encourages exploration.
The design helps tell the story of the river itself, which makes the journey feel far more immersive. Instead of simply travelling along the Zambezi, you gain a deeper appreciation for its history, its people and its importance to the region. It is a subtle touch, but one that adds considerable depth to the overall experience and helps make the Zambezi Trader feel much more than just a place to sleep between destinations.
Understanding the Three Decks
The Zambezi Trader offers accommodation across three decks, each catering to different budgets, group sizes and travel styles. One of the strengths of the vessel is that there is genuinely something for everyone, whether you are looking for a great-value cabin simply to enjoy time on the river or a more premium experience with additional space and exclusive facilities. Before booking, it is worth understanding the differences between the decks, as the onboard experience can vary quite significantly depending on where your cabin is located.
A Deck – Excellent Value
The lower deck consists entirely of twin cabins and represents the most affordable way to experience the cruise. While these are the entry-level rooms, they still include everything needed for a comfortable stay, including an en-suite bathroom with shower, mosquito nets, luggage storage space and a small private balcony with outdoor seating.
The cabins are not particularly large, but they feel bright, airy and welcoming thanks to large windows that allow plenty of natural light inside. The décor is simple but comfortable, and the clever use of space means there is room for everything required during a short cruise. We particularly liked the private balconies, which provide a peaceful spot to sit and watch the riverbanks drift past while enjoying a morning coffee or an evening drink.
Although they cannot be converted into double rooms due to their layout and are therefore only suitable for twin occupancy, they offer excellent value for travellers who want to experience life on the Zambezi without stretching their budget. For couples travelling together who don’t mind twin beds, friends travelling together, or small groups looking for a cost-effective option, these cabins are likely to be more than sufficient. Given the amount of time many guests spend enjoying the public areas, pools and viewing decks, the cabins serve their purpose very well.
B Deck – Family-Friendly but Compact
The middle deck offers a variety of room configurations, including some cabins with bunk beds alongside double beds, making them the most suitable option for families. Only children over the age of 12 are permitted onboard, primarily for safety reasons. While these cabins can work well for families, they are noticeably more compact than those found elsewhere on the vessel. Storage space is limited and there is very little room for luggage, so longer stays can feel a little cramped. For this reason, we believe connecting cabins often work best for families, while some guests may prefer booking two separate cabins on A Deck to gain a little more space.
The cabins on B Deck also felt somewhat darker than those on the other decks, largely due to their position within the vessel. Guests who enjoy spending lots of time in their room may therefore find the accommodation a little less appealing than the brighter cabins on A Deck or the spacious suites on C Deck. However, B Deck does benefit from being at the heart of the ship’s social life. This level houses the main lounge and dining area, meaning guests are never far from a drink, a meal or a conversation with fellow travellers. The trade-off is that there can occasionally be a little more activity and noise nearby, particularly around meal times or in the evenings when guests gather in the communal spaces.
One of the highlights of this deck is the swimming pool located at the front of the vessel. From here, guests can enjoy uninterrupted views across the river while cooling off from the African heat. It is a lovely place to spend an afternoon watching the scenery pass by and often becomes a popular gathering point during the warmer parts of the day.
C Deck – The Premium Experience
At the top of the vessel sits C Deck, the premium accommodation category, and the difference is immediately noticeable. We were fortunate enough to stay on this deck during our cruise and absolutely loved the experience. From the moment we stepped into our cabin, it felt like a peaceful sanctuary on the river and quickly became one of our favourite places to spend time onboard.
The cabins are significantly larger than those on the lower decks, with many featuring dedicated seating areas and some even offering bathtubs. Spacious private balconies provide the perfect place to enjoy a morning coffee, read a book, watch local life pass along the riverbanks or simply sit and admire the ever-changing scenery. There is something wonderfully relaxing about having your own private outdoor space while cruising along the Zambezi. The additional space makes a real difference, particularly for guests staying several nights onboard. Rather than simply serving as a place to sleep, these cabins feel more like private retreats where you can comfortably relax between meals and activities. We found ourselves spending plenty of time on our balcony, enjoying the views and appreciating the slower pace of life on the river. After busy safari days elsewhere in Zimbabwe, having this extra room to unwind felt like a real luxury.
What really distinguishes C Deck is the sense of exclusivity. Guests staying here have access to their own private lounge, bar, dining area and swimming pool, all reserved exclusively for C Deck passengers. This creates a noticeably quieter and more intimate atmosphere compared with the rest of the vessel. With just eight cabins accommodating a maximum of sixteen guests, the experience feels far more personal and uncrowded. Whether relaxing by the pool, enjoying a meal or unwinding in the lounge, there is always plenty of space available. For travellers who value privacy and prefer a more boutique-style experience, this dedicated area of the ship is a major attraction.
The private dining area also adds an extra touch of exclusivity, allowing guests to enjoy meals in a quieter setting while still benefiting from the same friendly service found throughout the vessel. Combined with the dedicated bar and lounge, it creates the feeling of a small luxury cruise experience within the larger ship. We particularly enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere in the evenings, when guests would gather for a drink while watching the colours of the sunset reflect across the river.
The higher price point naturally reflects these additional comforts and private facilities, but for travellers seeking the most spacious accommodation, greater privacy and a more exclusive onboard experience, it is easy to understand the appeal. C Deck feels special from the outset and is likely to be particularly popular with couples celebrating special occasions, groups of friends travelling together, or anyone looking to end a safari adventure with a little extra comfort and indulgence. Having experienced it ourselves, we would happily choose this deck again.
The Real Attraction: Life on the River
The biggest reason to choose the Zambezi Trader isn’t luxury, fishing or even the possibility of spotting wildlife along the riverbanks. The real attraction is something much simpler, and arguably much rarer in today’s world: the opportunity to completely switch off and relax. There is something wonderfully calming about spending a few days cruising along the mighty Zambezi River. As the boat gently makes its way upstream, Zimbabwe stretches along one bank while Zambia unfolds on the other. The scenery is constantly changing, yet never feels rushed. Instead, the river sets the pace, encouraging guests to slow down and appreciate the journey rather than focus on reaching a destination.
One of the joys of travelling on the Zambezi Trader is watching everyday life unfold along the river. Small fishing villages appear in the distance before slowly drifting past. Children run to the shoreline to wave enthusiastically at the boat. Fishermen paddle traditional canoes across the water, while smoke rises gently from riverside communities preparing the day’s catch. It offers a fascinating glimpse into a way of life that has remained closely connected to the river for generations.
The river itself is endlessly captivating. Water birds skim across the surface, kingfishers dart between branches, and the changing light creates a constantly evolving landscape. Early mornings bring soft golden hues across the water, while evenings deliver spectacular African sunsets that seem to stretch forever. Even when nothing particularly dramatic is happening, there is always something beautiful to look at.
Unlike a traditional safari, where days often begin before sunrise and are packed with activities, life onboard encourages a slower rhythm. There is no pressure to be constantly doing something. Instead, you can spend their time exactly as you choose. Curl up with a good book in one of the lounges, enjoy a leisurely drink while watching the riverbanks drift by, cool off in the pool, or simply settle into a comfortable chair on your private balcony and watch the world go past.
For travellers who don’t particularly enjoy beach holidays but still want a peaceful ending to an African adventure, the Zambezi Trader offers a fantastic alternative. You are surrounded by nature, immersed in beautiful scenery and completely removed from the stresses of everyday life, yet there is always something interesting happening beyond the railings. It is the perfect place to recharge your batteries before heading home, leaving you with a completely different perspective on one of Africa’s most iconic rivers.
Food and Dining
Dining onboard was relaxed and sociable, and we found meal times became a lovely opportunity to chat with other guests and hear about their travels around Zimbabwe and beyond. Whether people had just come from Hwange, Victoria Falls or were continuing on to other parts of Africa, there was always an interesting conversation happening somewhere around the dining room.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all included in the cruise, and during our stay there was a good variety of options available at each meal. Breakfasts offered a selection of hot and cold items to set you up for the day, while lunches and dinners featured a mix of local and international dishes. Meals were generally served buffet-style or family-style, creating an informal atmosphere that suited the overall feel of the cruise perfectly.
It is probably fair to say that the food is not intended to compete with high-end gourmet restaurants, but that is not really the point of the experience. We found the meals consistently enjoyable, with generous portions and enough variety that there was always something appealing to choose from. After a day spent relaxing on the river, watching the scenery drift by or enjoying one of the excursions, the food was exactly what we wanted in that it was basic, but satisfying and plentiful.
For those who add the drinks package, a range of beverages is included throughout the stay, making it easy to enjoy a cold drink while watching the sunset over the Zambezi or relaxing on deck as the boat cruises gently along the river.
Activities Onboard
While the main appeal of the Zambezi Trader is undoubtedly the chance to relax and enjoy life on the river, there are a number of activities available for those who want to explore a little more. During our three-night cruise, we found the balance worked really well. There was never any pressure to join excursions, but there were plenty of opportunities to get off the boat and experience the river and local communities in a different way.
One of the highlights for us was the sunset tender cruise where we transferred to smaller boats which can access quieter channels and areas that the main vessel cannot reach. As the day begins to cool and the light softens, you glide through the waterways with a drink in hand, watching the sky transform into spectacular shades of orange, pink and gold. The sunsets on the Zambezi are truly breathtaking, and being out on the water as the day comes to an end felt incredibly peaceful. We also enjoyed spotting birdlife along the riverbanks and simply soaking up the atmosphere.
For those interested in local culture, visits to nearby fishing villages provide a fascinating glimpse into everyday life along the river. The communities are welcoming and happy to share their way of life with visitors. During the visit, you’ll learn about traditional fishing techniques, see how fish are smoked and preserved, discover how food is stored, and gain a better understanding of how these remote communities operate. Local women also demonstrate some of the crafts they produce, with opportunities to purchase handmade items directly from the people who create them. What we particularly appreciated was how genuine the experience felt, offering a real insight into life on the Zambezi rather than a staged tourist attraction.
Fishing is another popular activity and can be enjoyed at different levels depending on your interest. You can try your luck fishing directly from the boat using rods provided onboard. However, for those who take their fishing more seriously, half-day and full-day sport fishing excursions can be arranged at an additional cost. These trips take place on fully equipped fishing boats accompanied by experienced guides who know the river intimately. The ultimate goal is often to catch one of the Zambezi’s famous tiger fish or giant catfish. Some of these fish can weigh more than 40 kilograms, making for an exciting challenge and plenty of stories to tell afterwards. Even if you’re not an angler yourself, watching fellow guests battle with these powerful fish can be surprisingly entertaining!
Who Is the Zambezi Trader For?
With capacity for more than 60 guests, the Zambezi Trader is not a tiny boutique river vessel, but that actually creates a great deal of flexibility. Couples and families can simply book individual cabins on scheduled departures, while larger groups can charter sections of the vessel or even hire the entire boat for a private experience. Most departures currently operate as two or three-night cruises throughout much of the year, making it easy to incorporate into a wider Zimbabwe itinerary. Looking ahead, there are also exciting plans being explored for longer seven-day expedition cruises travelling further towards Lake Kariba and potentially linking with destinations such as Matusadona National Park and Mana Pools, opening up even more possibilities for travellers wanting to experience Zimbabwe from the water.
A Few Things to Know Before You Go
While the Zambezi Trader is a wonderfully relaxing experience, there are a few practical points worth knowing before you travel to make sure it is right for you. As the vessel moves along the river each morning, guests should expect relatively early starts. The boat’s engines are very noticeable when they begin operating, so you will likely find yourself waking when the day’s cruising begins, and it is difficult to sleep through the churn of the engines to have a lie-in!
It is also important to understand that this is not designed as a river safari experience. While sightings of hippos, crocodiles, elephants and a variety of birdlife are certainly possible, wildlife viewing is not the primary purpose of the journey. The focus is instead on enjoying the scenery, local communities, and the peaceful experience of travelling along one of Africa’s most iconic rivers. If your main priority is a wildlife-focused river cruise with game viewing at the heart of the experience, then vessels such as the Chobe Princesses or the Zambezi Queen in Botswana may be more suitable options. The Zambezi Trader offers something different – a chance to slow down, relax and immerse yourself in life on the river.
As with any trip in a tropical river environment, insects are naturally part of the experience and it’s worth arriving prepared for that possibility. The Zambezi Trader operates on one of Africa’s great rivers, surrounded by water, vegetation and abundant wildlife, creating the perfect habitat for a wide variety of insects. While the crew work hard to keep guest areas comfortable, completely eliminating insects simply isn’t possible in this type of natural setting. At certain times of year, particularly around the water and after dark, there can be quite a lot of insects about, especially if cabin doors or windows are left open with lights on, which naturally attracts them. You should bring suitable insect repellent, consider wearing longer sleeves and trousers in the evenings, and follow any recommended malaria prevention measures. Mosquito nets are provided in all cabins, and taking simple precautions such as keeping doors and windows closed after dark will help minimise any unwanted visitors while still allowing you to enjoy this beautiful river environment.
Finally, the cruise operates in a remote part of Zimbabwe, which is very much part of its appeal. One of the joys of travelling on the Zambezi Trader is escaping busy towns, crowded tourist areas and the constant distractions of modern life. Instead, you are surrounded by nature, small riverside communities and vast stretches of beautiful wilderness. However, this remoteness does mean that medical facilities are not immediately accessible. While the vessel is equipped with first aid supplies and the crew are experienced in operating in this environment, access to advanced medical care could take some time should it be required. Guests with existing medical conditions should ensure they bring any necessary medication with them, as supplies will not be readily available in the area. As with any trip to a remote destination, comprehensive travel insurance that includes medical evacuation cover is strongly recommended, providing peace of mind so you can simply relax and enjoy your time on the river.
Building the Perfect Zimbabwe Itinerary
The Zambezi Trader fits beautifully into a variety of Zimbabwe and Southern Africa itineraries, and in many ways it solves a common challenge travellers face when planning an African adventure. Most safari holidays are packed with early starts, game drives and exciting activities from dawn until dusk. While this is undoubtedly part of the magic, many travellers find themselves needing a few days to slow down and absorb everything they have experienced before heading home. The Zambezi Trader provides the perfect finale.
Victoria Falls and Hwange National Park
This combination showcases some of Zimbabwe’s greatest highlights. Begin with Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Spend a few days exploring the falls themselves, taking a sunset cruise, enjoying helicopter flights, visiting local markets or perhaps trying some of the adventure activities for which the town is famous. From there, continue to Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe’s largest national park and one of Africa’s finest safari destinations. Hwange is renowned for its huge elephant populations, excellent predator sightings and diverse landscapes. After several days of game drives and safari activities, transfer to Msuna Island and board the Zambezi Trader for a relaxing conclusion to your trip. Rather than rushing between activities, you can spend your final days unwinding on the river, reflecting on your safari experiences while enjoying the scenery and peaceful atmosphere.
Victoria Falls, Mana Pools or Matusadona National Park
For travellers seeking a more remote and adventurous safari experience, this itinerary is particularly appealing. Mana Pools is widely regarded as one of Africa’s most special wilderness areas, famous for its walking safaris, canoeing opportunities and exceptional wildlife encounters. It offers a very different experience from Hwange, with a stronger focus on exploring nature on foot and enjoying a true sense of wilderness. Matusadona National Park, situated on the shores of Lake Kariba, is another hidden gem offering excellent game viewing, beautiful scenery and a far less crowded safari experience than many better-known parks. Following several days immersed in these wild landscapes, the Zambezi Trader provides a wonderfully contrasting experience, allowing guests to continue enjoying nature while slowing the pace considerably.
For travellers with more time available, it is easy to combine several of Zimbabwe’s highlights into one extended journey. A two-week itinerary might include Victoria Falls, Hwange National Park, Matopos and a Zambezi Trader cruise, creating a well-balanced trip that combines iconic attractions, exceptional wildlife viewing and relaxation. However, those with even longer can add Mana Pools or Matusadona for a deeper exploration of Zimbabwe’s diverse safari offerings.
Wider Southern African Adventures.
Many visitors choose to combine Zimbabwe with neighbouring Botswana. A particularly popular route includes Victoria Falls, Chobe National Park and the Zambezi Trader. Chobe is famous for its enormous elephant herds and river-based wildlife viewing, making it a natural complement to both Victoria Falls and the cruise. Travellers can enjoy world-class safari experiences before finishing with a few days of relaxation on the Zambezi.
South Africa combinations are equally attractive. Many international visitors begin their journey in Cape Town, exploring the city’s beaches, vineyards, restaurants and iconic landmarks such as Table Mountain. From there, they may continue along the Garden Route or head to Kruger National Park for safari before flying to Victoria Falls and ending their trip onboard the Zambezi Trader. The contrast between cosmopolitan Cape Town, thrilling safari experiences and the tranquillity of the Zambezi creates an incredibly varied holiday.
For those seeking the ultimate Southern African itinerary, it is entirely possible to combine Cape Town, Kruger, Victoria Falls, Chobe and the Zambezi Trader into one unforgettable journey. While ambitious, this route showcases some of the very best experiences the region has to offer.
Ultimately, the Zambezi Trader works best as either a relaxing finale to a safari-focused itinerary or as a unique centrepiece within a broader Southern African adventure. It offers something genuinely different from the traditional safari circuit and provides a memorable way to experience the Zambezi River while balancing the excitement and activity of the rest of your journey.
Don’t Overlook Msuna Island
One additional advantage of the Zambezi Trader’s new location at Msuna Island is the flexibility it provides. You can easily add a night or two before or after your cruise at one of the local lodges, allowing even more time to relax by the river. This can be particularly appealing for travellers who prefer not to move too quickly between destinations. Msuna Island itself deserves a little attention because it is something of a hidden gem, with several small lodges in the area making it easy to arrive early or extend your stay before or after the cruise. We stayed at Island Lodge and thoroughly enjoyed it. Comfortable air-conditioned rooms, lovely river views, outdoor showers, a swimming pool and a welcoming bar create an ideal environment for unwinding. It is also an excellent base for additional fishing excursions and provides a rare opportunity to experience a quieter side of Zimbabwe, far removed from the country’s more heavily visited tourist destinations.
Final Thoughts
The Zambezi Trader offers something genuinely different to many of the experiences typically found in Southern Africa. While most visitors focus their time on safari vehicles, game drives and wildlife viewing, this journey is all about slowing down and appreciating the river itself. It provides a chance to experience a quieter, more peaceful side of Africa that many travellers never get to see.
River cruising is still relatively uncommon on the continent, and the Zambezi Trader is unlike the large river ships many people associate with Europe. The focus here is not on packed sightseeing schedules or ticking attractions off a list. Instead, the experience centres around the ever-changing scenery of the Zambezi, encounters with local riverside communities, beautiful sunsets, comfortable accommodation and the simple pleasure of spending time on the water.
The cruise works equally well for couples looking for a romantic escape, groups of friends travelling together, families with older children, or larger groups wanting to charter the entire vessel. With a range of cabin categories and flexible itineraries, it can be tailored to suit different budgets and travel styles. It also combines exceptionally well with some of Zimbabwe’s most popular destinations, making it an ideal addition to a wider itinerary that includes Victoria Falls, Hwange National Park, Mana Pools or even neighbouring Botswana.
Perhaps the greatest appeal of the Zambezi Trader is the opportunity to truly unwind. After days of early starts, long safari drives and busy sightseeing schedules, there is something wonderfully therapeutic about sitting on your balcony, watching local life unfold along the riverbanks and letting the world drift by at a slower pace. It is the perfect place to recharge, reflect on your adventures and enjoy a few days surrounded by nature before returning home.
For us, the three nights passed remarkably quickly. By the time we disembarked, we felt relaxed, refreshed and already wishing we had booked a little longer. For travellers seeking a unique and memorable way to end an African adventure, the Zambezi Trader is certainly worth considering.
