Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge is a well-known and popular safari lodge in Tsavo West National Park, largely due to its excellent wildlife viewing. The setting is dramatic, with wide open landscapes and volcanic terrain, but the true star of the lodge is the waterhole located directly in front of the main building. From arrival, it is clear why this lodge is so highly regarded for sightings.

The waterhole is by far the highlight and is consistently very active. Wildlife comes to drink throughout the day, offering rewarding viewing without even leaving the lodge. Elephants, buffalo and other plains game are frequently seen, and the elevated viewing areas make it easy to watch animals at close range in comfort.

Some of the rooms also face the waterhole, and we would strongly recommend upgrading to these if possible. Being able to sit on your terrace and watch wildlife coming and going adds a huge amount to the experience. It transforms the stay and allows for incredible moments of observation at any time of day.

The rooms themselves are functional and comfortable, though the décor is dated, and there are signs of wear and tear. While they may not feel modern or luxurious, they provide everything needed for a safari stay and are suitable to the lodge’s mid-range positioning.

Meals at Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge are served buffet style and are perfectly adequate for a lodge of this category. There is a good selection and the quality is solid rather than standout. Overall, Kilaguni Serena remains a popular choice in Tsavo West thanks to its excellent waterhole, reliable comfort and consistently strong wildlife sightings, making it a rewarding stop on a Kenyan safari.
