100 Countries and Counting: A Milestone in My Travel Story

Well, it’s official – I’ve just hit my 100th country! And wow, what a journey it’s been. From pitching a tent across Europe in the late 90s to hopping over to Rwanda for the weekend (yes, really), I’ve come a long way – quite literally – since that first inter-railing trip in 1998, where I first understood my passion for travel, and all it brought to enrich my life. Back then, it all started with my best friend and a big backpack. We spent a summer zig-zagging across Europe, camping to save money and soaking up every bit of culture, chaos and croissants we could find. That trip lit a spark in me that’s never gone out – the thrill of seeing new places, meeting new people, and collecting unforgettable experiences. And now, 100 countries later, I can honestly say that my love for travel is stronger than ever.

Anyone who knows me won’t be surprised that my heart belongs to Africa. It’s a continent that has given me so much joy – and I return to it time and time again. From vast safaris and bustling cities to untouched wilderness and warm hospitality, Africa always feels like my second home. My 99th country was Tunisia over Easter – and for once, I intentionally took things slow. It was a true “flop and drop” escape. Sunshine, sea views, good books, and delicious pastries and desserts – nothing more, nothing less. Sometimes, even I need to switch off (well, kind of).

Then came the milestone – country number 100 – Rwanda. Yes, I flew out for a weekend over the bank holiday (because why not celebrate in style?). I travelled with one of my favourite travel companions, Karen, and we packed so much in – from the stunning shores of Lake Kivu, to a thrilling safari in Akagera National Park, and a powerful, humbling visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial. We also set off on a wonderful trek in Volcanoes National Park to see the enchanting golden monkeys up close. Watching these rare and playful creatures leap through the bamboo forest was an absolute highlight – an experience that felt both intimate and magical.

Of course, not all trips go exactly to plan – and this one was no exception. We decided to make a bold side trip into the Democratic Republic of Congo, crossing the lake (yes, I’m officially counting it as country 101 – when you venture into the red zones, it definitely counts!). What was meant to be a brief detour turned into an unexpected “city tour” of sorts, taking us through not one, but two DRC border points – a region still very much at risk of instability and attacks. It was surreal, slightly tense, but also one of those wild travel stories I’ll never forget. It was a short trip, but packed with heart, adventure, and perspective. Rwanda is a country of incredible resilience, natural beauty, and soul – and I feel so lucky to have experienced it.

I know how fortunate I am to be able to travel so frequently – and it’s not something I take for granted. I truly love what I do. Exploring new places, learning about different cultures, trying out new dishes (some more successful than others!) and simply seeing the world through someone else’s lens. Travel inspires me daily, and I’m constantly grateful for the incredible people I’ve met along the way.

As you can imagine, as I travel so much, people always ask me: “What are your favourite countries?” And it’s always a tough one, because every destination offers something special. But yes, there are a few standouts…

South Africa – The Country that has it All!

No surprises here — South Africa absolutely tops the list of my favourite destinations. It’s a country that has completely captured my heart, and one I make a point to visit at least once a year. Every time I land there, it feels like coming home. South Africa offers such an extraordinary variety of experiences: world-class safaris, dramatic mountain ranges, golden coastlines, rich culture and history, and some of the warmest, most welcoming people you could hope to meet.

Cape Town, in particular, has a very special place in my heart. It’s a city bursting with creative energy — from its thriving art scene and vibrant theatre productions to its incredible food and wine culture. I love wandering the galleries, catching a local performance, and of course, indulging in some of the best restaurants in the world, all while surrounded by breathtaking scenery. One minute you’re exploring the colourful streets of Bo-Kaap, the next you’re tasting your way through the Winelands, or exploring Table Mountain for jaw-dropping views over the Atlantic.

But what really makes South Africa stand out is the variety it offers. You can be on a Big 5 safari one day, sipping award-winning wines the next, and relaxing on a secluded beach the day after. Whether I’m adventuring in the Eastern Cape, exploring the Garden Route, or enjoying the pulse of Johannesburg, I’m constantly amazed by the diversity and beauty packed into one country. South Africa really does have it all — and I know I’ll keep going back for many years to come.

Zimbabwe: Wild Beauty and Warm Welcomes

Zimbabwe holds a very special place on my list too, and it’s a country I find myself returning to again and again. There’s just something about the combination of spectacular wildlife, varied landscapes, and the famously warm hospitality that keeps drawing me back. Every visit feels like reconnecting with an old friend. Zimbabwe offers some of the most affordable yet world-class safari experiences anywhere in Africa, making it a dream for both seasoned safari-goers and first-timers alike. I’ve been lucky enough to explore many diverse regions of Zimbabwe  — and every trip has delivered something truly special. The wildlife sightings have been phenomenal, from huge herds of elephants and thrilling predator encounters to rare birdlife that keeps even the most experienced twitchers on their toes.

Of course, no trip to Zimbabwe would be complete without a stop at Victoria Falls, one of the world’s most awe-inspiring natural wonders. I never tire of feeling the thunder of the falls or taking in the misty rainbows that dance above the gorge. Beyond the scenery and wildlife, what always stands out to me is the genuine kindness and hospitality of the Zimbabwean people. Whether it’s the guides who share their deep knowledge of the bush or the lodge teams who welcome you like family, the warmth and pride they have for their country shines through. Every time I visit, I feel completely at home — and I know I’ll keep going back.

Spain – My European Favourite

Spain has always been a favourite of mine when it comes to Europe. There’s something about the combination of glorious sunshine, laid-back lifestyle, and incredible food that keeps me going back. I’m particularly drawn to Madrid and Valencia, two cities that offer their own unique charm. Madrid pulses with energy – world-class museums, grand boulevards, and the simple pleasure of sipping a coffee in a sun-drenched plaza, watching the world go by. Valencia, with its stunning blend of futuristic architecture and beautiful old town, is equally irresistible. The beaches are fantastic, the paella (born here!) is second to none, and there’s a sense of calm and authenticity that makes it easy to slow down and savour every moment. I love the Spanish culture of living in the moment – long lunches, late dinners, and a passion for enjoying life. Every visit leaves me dreaming of when I’ll return.

Chile – The South American Gem

Chile was the ultimate surprise. I went with little expectation and left completely in awe. The sheer diversity of landscapes took my breath away — from the otherworldly deserts of the north to the dramatic glaciers and fjords of the south. One of the true highlights was exploring the Carretera Austral, one of the most remote and beautiful self-drive routes I’ve ever done. It was raw and rugged, with wild scenery around every bend. I’ll never forget my nerve-wracking boat trip to the Marble Caves, where huge waves and a tiny rowing boat made for an unforgettable (and slightly terrifying!) adventure. Beyond the wilderness, Santiago’s vibrant music and food scene brought the perfect contrast. Tasting local seafood and sipping crisp Chilean wines under the towering Andes was a memory I’ll always cherish. Chile had it all — adventure, nature, culture, and that perfect sense of being off the beaten track.

New Zealand – True Natural Beauty

New Zealand holds a huge place in my heart, not just for its natural beauty but for the personal memories I’ve made there. I’ve had the absolute joy of doing two extended self-drive tours around New Zealand with my parents, and those trips are full of treasured moments. From exploring the lush rolling hills and glowworm caves of the North Island to being blown away by the towering peaks, glaciers, and mirror-like lakes of the South Island, every day brought something new. I’ve never tired of the endless photo stops (trust me, there are a lot!), nor the friendly Kiwi hospitality that greets you everywhere. The country feels vast yet intimate, wild yet welcoming. I also have some fantastic friends there, and it’s always a treat to catch up whenever I return. New Zealand truly holds a strong place in my heart, and I know it’s a place I’ll keep revisiting for many years to come.

What Next?

I’m already counting down the days until my next adventure. Moldova is set to be country number 102 this June — a quick weekend escape that I’m really looking forward to. While it’s often overlooked by many travellers, that only adds to the appeal for me. I love visiting those “hidden gem” destinations that fly under the radar. I’m excited to explore the cobbled streets of Chișinău, sample the local wines Moldova is quietly famous for, and soak up the culture and history of one of Europe’s lesser-visited countries. It may only be a short trip, but if travel has taught me anything, it’s that even a few days can offer unexpected adventures and leave you with lasting memories. I can’t wait to see what Moldova has in store!

And yes – country 103 is already booked. Sierra Leone is on the horizon for October, and I’m already counting down the days until my next adventure. I’m especially looking forward to visiting Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary, the Banana Islands, Bunce Island, hiking Kabala Hill, and experiencing the unique ways of life of the Robgbonko Village Retreat. Every trip is a reminder of how vast and beautiful the world is – and how lucky I am to keep exploring it, one country at a time.

I’ve still got some big ones on my wishlist too, and the excitement of planning future adventures is all part of the fun. Eritrea is high up there, with its fascinating history, unique architecture, and the promise of exploring somewhere very few travellers venture to. The Central African Republic is another dream, specifically to visit the incredible Sangha Lodge, tucked away in the heart of the rainforest. I can only hope to be lucky enough to spot wild gorillas and the elusive pangolin in their natural habitat — an experience that would be truly life-changing.

For years, I’ve been toying with the idea of a five-country Silk Road journey, weaving through the ancient trade routes and cultures of Central Asia, and it remains firmly on my radar. More recently, after an inspiring chat with a fantastic tour operator at Destinations, Mongolia and even North Korea have edged their way onto my list. The raw landscapes of Mongolia and the curiosity of visiting one of the world’s most enigmatic countries definitely call to the explorer in me.

And then, of course, there’s the big one: Antarctica. The final continent I’ve yet to step foot on. It’s already pencilled in — in true style — with my adventure partner, Karen. We’ve given ourselves about five years (a girl needs time to save!) before we take the plunge. It’s the ultimate travel goal for me, and knowing it’s out there waiting just adds to the excitement.

My friends often joke that I’m never in the country – and well, they’re not necessarily wrong. But that’s because I genuinely love this. I thrive on new experiences, and I hope I’m lucky enough to keep exploring for many more years to come. My dream? To reach at least 95% of the world’s countries. 100%? We will see… I’m not sure I’m brave enough for all of them!

For now, I’ll keep travelling with an open heart and a curious mind – and I’ll continue sharing the magic of the world with others, one unforgettable (and often hilarious) journey at a time.
