Senegal is a vibrant and fascinating country to visit. With Dakar being an international hub the capital is well developed with great restaurants and bars, and plenty to offer any visitor to the country. It is worth staying in Dakar because there are a few excellent day trips that can be done directly from the city. The most notable is Goree Island, known for its role in the 15th- to 19th-century Atlantic slave trade. A short ferry ride gets you to the island that is covered with small cobbled streets that are easy to explore. You shouldn't miss the informative and emotional House of Slaves, now a museum.
Lac Rose, or the pink lake is also an easy trip out from Dakar, and highly recommended as there are only a few pink lakes scattered around the world. Of course no trip to Dakar is complete without a trip to see the African Renaissance Monument - the largest statue in Africa.
Outside of Dakar, Saly is a great destination to spend a couple of days at the beach, with lots of accommodation options. By far one of the mot unique places to visit in the country is Joal-Fadiouth - Shell Island, and it is literally an island built entirely of seashells. There is a bridge over to the island, however I do recommend a relaxing boat ride back, as a great end to the trip. Saint Louis is recommended as a top place to visit for its colonial architecture, unfortunately a number of the buildings were in a very poor state on our last visit.
